Three former ABC employees have died after they were exposed to asbestos at the broadcaster's former offices in the Melbourne suburb of Elsternwick.
The deaths, related to exposure between the 1950s and the 1980s, were confirmed at Senate estimates on Tuesday.
ABC chief financial officer Melanie Kleyn said it was not possible to confirm whether the deaths were "actually due" to the workers being at the site, but said they were "related to exposure" and that the broadcaster had contacted the families of the deceased.
Managing director Hugh Marks said the deaths were "horrific" and that the ABC was "deeply concerned" for those affected, adding that asbestos exposure had affected many Australian buildings and businesses.
Staff were also exposed at Melbourne's Broadcast House over a similar period of time. Senators were told the ABC did not have an exhaustive list of those who may be affected, but had made efforts to contact them and would pay medical costs.
The government insurer Comcare also handles compensation claims for injuries or illnesses related to the asbestos exposure of employees of government-funded agencies, including the ABC.
Earlier the ABC told Liberal senator Sarah Henderson that there had been two deaths, but corrected that figure in the hearing.
Executives also confirmed that 13 active ABC sites had been found to have asbestos in them and said that they were being continually managed in conjunction with licensed contractors to ensure that staff in those buildings were not being exposed.
Those sites, available in a property information section of the ABC staff intranet, are Tamworth, Warrnambool, Geelong, Rockhampton, the Adelaide office in Collinswood, the Canberra office in Dickson, an office and residence in Longreach, a residence in Mount Isa, an office in Kununurra, and offices in Darwin and Launceston.
In a statement in March Mr Marks said the ABC would arrange access to specialist medical support for current and former staff and said the broadcaster was being "proactive" in reaching out.
"We are very aware and understand how confronting this is to any current or former employees who worked at the Elsternwick studios and Broadcast House," he said at the time.
"We completely understand how this situation can create anxiety … unfortunately, the community has been faced with this issue for a long time and health impact on individuals and their families from the widespread use of these products has been a great tragedy."
Last month union peak body the ACTU called for legal reform to require employers to remove asbestos from buildings.
"Despite a national ban more than two decades ago, more than 6 million tones of asbestos remain in our homes, schools and workplaces," assistant secretary Liam O'Brien said.
"Under current laws, employers are not required to remove asbestos from workplaces unless it is broken, at which point workers and the community may have already been exposed."
