In short:

The site to build a proposed desalination plant, which is part of the $5 billion Northern Water project, has been chosen 20 kilometres south of Whyalla.

It could bring an economic boost to the Spencer Gulf, but concerns remain about its environmental impacts.

What's next?

A $200 million pre-feasibility study is still assessing the project, and a final decision on whether it will proceed is due next year.
