Britain's Labour government says it will undertake a major overhaul of its asylum seeker policies to echo the tough approach of its European neighbours such as Denmark.

Under the changes, refugee status will become temporary and "regularly reviewed", while the wait for permanent settlement will be quadrupled from five to 20 years.

Further details about the measures, which have attracted harsh criticism from rights groups, are expected to be released on Monday.
