Parents call for action after Islah Metcalfe's death outside Rouse Hill Public School

Parents of students at a Sydney school where a five-year-old girl was hit by a car and killed last week have demanded action to prevent another tragedy.

Islah Metcalfe died in hospital last Thursday after being struck by a ute leaving a Rouse Hill Public School car park.

Victoria Garcia-Todd's nine-year-old daughter goes to the school and she said they contacted the school after the death suggesting the driveway exit be monitored at peak times because the area had a blind spot.

However, Ms Garcia-Todd said the day after she and her husband Jeremy emailed the school and spoke in-person with management about putting someone at the gate to manage traffic, no-one was there.

"I get scoffed at, I get exasperated looks, like I'm the one who's being outrageous for demanding a plan of action, for demanding that something change, for wanting transparency," she said.

"I demanded a plan of action, and I have yet to see or receive anything from the school in terms of what we're going to be doing differently."

On Friday, Mr Todd felt compelled to watch the gate himself.

According to the parents, the gate was also left unattended on Monday.

"I just would've assumed that they would've taken immediate action the next day and had someone standing at that driveway.

"What is leadership in this school going to be doing specifically to reduce the risk of children getting hit by cars, coming in and out of that driveway and all the surrounding areas?"

'How can we prevent this from happening again?'

It is not clear who was driving the car when Islah Metcalfe was hit or why they were using or accessing the car park.

The driveway where she was hit is restricted to teachers and staff with a sign saying, "No parents or students are allowed".

However, Ms Garcia-Todd said she believed some parents at times ignored the sign and used the car park anyway.

Shane Stanley, whose daughter was Islah Metcalfe's classmate, said communication from the school was poor and left parents with many questions.

"There have been a couple of emails … not detailed, there was no nuance, there was no 'Here's what happened and here's what we're going to do about it, this is the tragedy, how can we prevent this from happening again?'."

"Certainly the school holds a lot of accountability, they don't hold all of it though. You've got to get the councils involved, you've got to get the local governments involved, you've got to get the community involved."

A spokesperson for the Department of Education said it was "ensuring staff, students, and the broader school community have the support they need".

"The school has been proactively working with the local council across a number of years to minimise traffic hazards around the school," the spokesperson said.

Family 'completely shattered'

More than $80,000 has been raised to support the girl's family with funeral arrangements.

A statement from Islah's relative, Jessica Rose, said the family was "completely shattered".

"There are no words to describe the pain of losing such a beautiful, happy, and innocent little girl," she said.

"She was cheeky and full of life, always smiling, always laughing, and brought so much light to everyone who knew her, we will never get to see her grow up and see the woman she would become."

Police said their investigation remained ongoing, and the death had been referred to the coroner.
