In short:

Nine men have been handed eight-month sentences after escaping their cells and rioting at the Alice Springs prison in January last year.

Their lawyers told the court the disturbance followed "overcrowding" in conditions community leaders have described as "inhumane".

What's next?

The inmates who have since been released were given suspended sentences, while the rest will serve their time concurrently with previous sentences.
