In short:

Hit-and-run victim Mr Whitehurst died from his injuries after he was run down near the Hibiscus Shopping Centre in Darwin's northern suburbs in June last year.

The driver who ran him down, fled the scene and then boasted about it to friends in text messages afterwards was sentenced to a 12-month community corrections order earlier this week.

Mr Whitehurst's family have today released a public statement on the matter, saying the sentence was inadequate and voicing their pain over Jake Danby's actions.
