In short:

Freedom of information documents show Victoria Police asked the government to tighten bail laws for multiple alleged arson offences, to help crack down on illegal tobacco firebombings.

The government only tightened bail for one arson offence, and a number of alleged arsonists have been released on bail since March.

What's next?

Police warn it has seen "cycle of re-offending" due to the current bail rules, but the government said it was acting to crack down on the illicit tobacco trade.
